Raiding an ancient city in Minecraft

I haven’t put enough work into progressing so far and it was starting to show. If a piece of armour broke I was pulling crap out of my skele farm. It’s also the weekend and I enjoy playing the game on the weekend.

It’s nice to focus less on building an experience and having an experience curated for you with the little extra time a weekend night brings. So I set off to an ancient city for pants and a warden induced adrenaline rush.

South of the island there is an ancient city according to chunkbase. I overnight-ed in a village near the location and got ready to make the plunge. Using freecam I determined I had a near straight shot down this cavern:

It even has water going down to the bottom; making access quick and safe.

Is ignorance bliss?

Well I woke up the warden pretty quickly. I got away safely; just barely. As the picture below shows; I was quite close. Though this felt closer than the screenshot suggests.

Thanks to the mini-map mod I know I was a lot closer than this picture when the warden crawled out of its deepslate home. I’m not sure if knowing the warden is right next to you is better or worse than not knowing at all in the complete darkness.

I looted a few chests; enough to fill my inventory and went back to the base camp I set up in a wall next to the city. I found a swift sneak 3 book and a decent hoe; but no pants.

Round 2

The next couple chests were much better. I got 2 pairs of okay pants. Both had unbreaking 3 and fire-protection 4. One was iron and had mending; the other was diamond. There were a number of good enchanted books in that chest.

The next chest had the otherside disk. A very great find, maybe my favourite of the music disks. Though It’s close to the jazzy stal disk.

there were two chests on one of the larger common structures; a barracks. I opened one chest without a shreiker going off but wasn’t as lucky with the second chest. This screenshot was taken with freecam:

I’m generally not very careful in an ancient city; especially before I have swift sneak. Even when i do and sneaking is significantly faster; it takes a lot of time to place wool (and usually pick it back up) to place a torch quietly.

With a careful eye you can see most of shreikers and you have 3 strikes before the warden awakens. There’s a 10 minute cool down after you trigger one, so if it’s been a while between activations you can go quite far without having a warden spawn.

Shreikers aren’t all that plentiful, and the time lost running from the warden until it disappears beneath the deepslate isn’t worth the amount of time it takes to be completely silent.

The excitement of waking the warden is worth any time it costs. If you don’t want to wait around you can start in another section of the city or empty your inventory into a chest. I enjoy hanging out just out of detection distance and trying to catch a close up with a spyglass.

Having a speedy exit and trying to find your way in the dark while minimizing the number of skulk sensors you trigger is a bunch of fun. Catch a second shreiker when running and it could be game over; especially if you find yourself cornered in an area you haven’t cleared yet.

Did I get some pants?

Yes, multiple pants. But no epic pants. I found a few iron leggings and a couple diamond ones but nothing that was perfect without adding enchantments. for now I’ll be wearing an iron pair.

I cleared the ancient City and was able to acquire some ward trim but no silence. I do think ancient cities, the deep dark and the warden is among the best additions to game-play. It really creates an immersive, intense experience with loot that can help you if your not at the end game.

Other Stuff

You may notice I’ve been wearing a turtle helmet in my recent posts. I created a small sandbar close to the main island and introduced some turtles to the area. I’ve built a sailing canoe with an outrigger here that I’ll talk more about in a future post.

I want to have a ethical method of obtaining scutes; not sure that’s possible but that was the reason I started this build. I also love building ships in Minecraft and wanted to try a 1 chunk boat. I’ll turn the sandbar with the barrel into a fishing spot to stay occupied while I wait on the eggs to hatch.

I needed packed mud bricks for the mast and decided to build a mud farm without looking at any tutorials. I’ve made a mistake using an observer to operate the farm but have an idea how to make it work. Once I’ve had time to fiddle with it I’ll go through it in detail.

I’ve noticed an issue with my super smelter. For some reason some fuel hoppers are not being filled and others are receiving extra fuel. I think it’s from the mine-cart moving around a corner in the routing. I may fix this soon or wait way too long to do something about it. It might be a big fix so…

A city build?

In simple I had used my home-base as a museum as sorts. Keeping retired gear, my first tools, maps documenting progress and treasures from my journeys. I would like to do something similar here.

Having a building with interior large enough to store all those things would blow my 1 chunk build guideline out of the water. I’ve decided instead to build a town. How does building a town help me stay inside that guideline? I’m going to build it 1 chunk at a time.

Every 500 days I’m going to add a house or multiple houses to the town and use the respective build to store items and maps significant to that 500 days of progress. This will allow me to complete a build in a reasonable amount of time instead of having a project drag on.

The town will feel incomplete at first, but once a few chunks are completed I think that feeling will fade. 500 days is quickly approaching and I’ve got the first chunk completed. Can’t wait to share it with you in a future post!
