New muses

I broke up with Minecraft last month. Will we are on a break, or whatever.

In this post I share a couple creative updates and try to find a new direction for this blog.

I’m posting once a month; hit the subscribe button below to stay up to date!

Removing a dimension – Why content is moving away from Minecraft

It’s not about Minecraft, it’s about Microsoft. Microsoft, for a while now, has been making decisions that don’t sit well with me. As hostility from Canada’s southern neighbour increases, it’s becoming harder to enjoy the game that has brought me an escape for so long.

Trees, custom and natural flank both sides of a small house built in terraria. A 3d perspective is forced with variations in block and wall types. It has 2 stories plus an attic and basement.

For the last couple months I’ve been playing terraria in place of Minecraft. This started with an invite from a friend to play on a server he was hosting. I’ve played terraria before but never as deep as Minecraft, however; this time around it hit different.

It was clear you could get things done on a shorter timeframe when compared to Minecraft. Something that is important as a parent with less time than I use to have.

I’ve been enjoying this Minecraft adjacent game and will share some progress in coming posts. I’m not sure if it’ll be a dedicated post format or some general updates.

Learning music

As I pause the monthly Minecraft content it makes space for other projects I want to explore. Increasingly my creative time is spent learning to play the guitar; or more accurately, learning how to play music.

I’ve played guitar on and off since I was a teenager but never put effort into learning the language of music. This most recent (and definitely most productive) stretches of playing started at the end of 2024.

A guitar sits in a black guitar stand. The guitar has a natural finish over walnut, maple and cherry. It has a slotted headstock and no visible pick-ups.

Despite this on and off interest, I’ve been fascinated with guitar building since my early 20s. Five years ago I started building a guitar but a major mistake and series of life events left it unfinished. In December I decided to jump back in; taking advantage of the holiday season to push this project across the finish line.

Having completed this guitar I’ve been able to play more consistently. As it is an electric guitar it has  allowed me to play with headphones on at times when playing my acoustic isn’t an option.

The finished project has not only increased my desire and ability to play, it has further driven my desire to build guitars. I have quickly  moved on to my next one and will share some updates on that moving forward!

Dropping the algorithm

Over the last year I’ve been pivoting away from Meta. It started with Instagram as the algorithms made it harder and harder to just see the content I wanted to see.

I’ve been relying on Mastodon as my primary social media experience over the last year. There’s a lot of talk right now about social media and the impacts it has on young people. It’s refreshing to experience social media without an algorithm pushing content and ads.

I’d like to hold space in my blog going forward to share some of my tech rebellion. The internet is beautiful when it’s about humans creating community. It’s terrible when it’s leveraged for power and wealth. Would love to hear about your decision to switch a platform or stop using a product and why in the comments.

Saying good-bye to a forever world?

Mojang’s values or the values of the Minecraft community resonate with me. I may come back to play and post about the game. For now, however, I need a break.

I can’t focus this much time, effort and internet presence on a Microsoft owned brand at this time.

If you took the time to read this one I’d appreciate your thoughts in the comments.
